Adopting a healthy diet

As food prices rise and the supply of produce is controlled, we must find a way of eating, mindful of the context and our own privilege. Building Immunity Your only innate guard is immunity,  and because we have a long way to go, it is best to try and get this strengthened The immunity function lie in the gut, so those who have constipation, acidity, or any other gut malfunction, could strengthen it with vitamins (especially Vit.C) and minerals  Onion, giner, garlic, tulsi, pomegranate, are all anti viral foods that reduce infection. It is safe to put these in the traditional foods we eat Black pepper, asafoetida, and carom are also useful Cutting Inflammation Internal inflammation makes you susceptible to disease Highly processed foods, and a diet rich in refined oils, high carbohydrates, high protein and simple sugars can cause inflammation. Cut down on sucrose-rich fruits  We need to use this time as an opportunity to eat healthy. Cooking fre...

Recession Versus Depression

RECESSION  GDP fall among two consecutive quarters under consideration  A natural occurrence and has room in the economic cycle  Results are short-run; hence impact can be managed  Ex: 1937 UK Recession DEPRESSION   GDP fall or significant amount of fall in GDP Does not happen frequently Has a severe impact on economy in the longer run Ex: Great Depression in 1929 which lasted for 10 years

Breathe Easy

Clearing The Air  The novel coronavirus has brought the world to a halt, but the environment is benefitting in a big way. In an attempt to decrease the rapid spread of COVID-19, economic activity has been hugely limited, resulting in a decline in CO2 emissions, said World Meteorological Department(WMO). WMO said that cuts in emissions dosen't mean that the world must stop its fight against climate change. Countries practising extreme lockdowns, like Italy and China, have seen the biggest decline. The CO2 data shows that the world typically sees an increase in CO2 emissions in the colder months in the Northern Hemisphere. However, this year has been different. “We are noticing an interesting development, as CO2 levels are currently increasing  at a much slower rate than expected”. Though social distancing has been difficult, it has a massively positive impact on CO2 emissions.

The Sequencing Approach

A war beyond just diagnosis  Winning a war would require the right strategy, rapid mobilisation of relevant resources and most importantly timely action.  On Sequencing So what is the sequencing approach to fight against this pandemic? What can be done? The first requirement is to sequence the genome of all the isolates from infected patients in India COVID-19, is a RNA virus This would require conversion to DNA and then the sequencing of the Alphabets(ATGC) worked out COVID-19 is less than 30kb (30,000) alphabets in size and can be sequences in 24 hours in India Also it needs to be realised that the copying mechanism of RNA to DNA can make errors In any case, it is important to sequence the virus isolates in at least three different institutions in India to ensure that sequencing errors are eliminated A knowledge of genome sequencing is essential to design drugs and vaccines
